Capitalizing on tech companies
Interview with Dan Roark, CEO, MatriCal
What is holding back the economy, and what can be done to accelerate growth?
"There is definitely a lack of local capital to support startups. Many venture-capital firms want to work with companies close to home in major markets. I think Spokane needs to think bigger and work harder to land technology-based businesses considering relocation from more expensive manufacturing locations like California and the East Coast."
How hard has it been to raise capital in this region?
"We are talking to investment capital firms in Seattle, San Francisco, San Diego, Chicago and Boston. Because of the market situation, all firms are moving slowly with additional caution."
What is the biggest challenge facing MatriCal in 2003?
"Additional capital investment. It would be funneled to increase our direct sales efforts and field support team, expand engineering depth for new product development and let us move all our manufacturing to the Spokane area."
